A mutual friend introduced Clare Elich and Shayne Floyd in the fall of 2017 and not long after, they started a new project that would later develop into the aptly named - The Two Determined. Influenced by similar artists including Tim O’Brien, Sarah Jarosz, Gillian Welch, and Mandolin Orange, Elich and Floyd’s strengths lie in their tight vocal harmonies that mirror the folk, acoustic, bluegrass, and old time genres.

After studying vocal performance at the College of Charleston, Clare paired her training with a love of bluegrass and new acoustic music when she picked up the banjo and became more involved in the Charleston and Colorado bluegrass communities. Shayne began playing guitar and singing in Boulder, CO with his first band - a bluegrass group called No Handle. In 1999 he moved to Charleston, SC and helped form the band Yeehaw Junction, and later, his own bluegrass band - River Boy. Not long after joining forces, Clare and Shayne recruited Tom DeLorge to bolster the group’s sound. Tom focuses on dobro and mandolin with this unit, but he is also a skilled banjo and guitar player. Most recently, Emily Damrel, a Charleston transplant from the Greensboro, NC music scene, rounded out the band’s sound on upright bass and vocal harmonies.

Regulars in the Charleston bluegrass scene,  The Two Determined’s members are seasoned performers, having played at the Charleston Music Hall, The Queen Street Playhouse (in the Queen Street Harmony Series created by Awendaw Green), The Charleston Bluegrass Festival, and numerous establishments across the Lowcountry.

In addition to a diverse blend of covered acoustic, folk, country, and bluegrass tunes, The Two Determined offer a number of original songs to follow suit. With experience in both unplugged and amplified settings, this group is a great fit for private events/weddings, breweries/bar entertainment, or casual, backyard gatherings.

This fall, they will expand their reach with dates in Colorado and at the Garden and Gun Made in the South Awards.
